Why am I addressing Enlightenment in the Western World? Well other than stating the obvious which is the fact that I live in the Western World, I’m also trying to address the first and largest hurdle of many which is “distraction”. Once we address the issue of distraction, we can then eventually head down the path of enlightenment and maximizing self potential. But first things first. To harness your full potential and reach enlightenment as a human being, you first have to come to terms with several values. One is the fact that your potential is limitless. It is bound by nothing but your mind really. Which ironically is also the driving force to reaching enlightenment. Once you accept the philosophy that you have limitless potential, then your journey through a fruitful, fulfilling, and happy life can begin. The second thing that you have to come to terms with is being honest to yourself. Consistent honesty with yourself and those around you. Honesty with your actions, your words, and your thoughts.
How will you know if you are headed towards or when you have reached enlightenment?
Well first you have to define what enlightenment means to you. Beauty has always been in the eye of the beholder and the same goes for accomplishment, self harmony, peace, and self purpose. Self Purpose should never be measured in tasks completed. Quantity is irrelevant. In fact, a single task in a positive forward motion will always illuminate Self Purpose. Self Purpose is self fuelling. You just have to feed it once and it will reproduce exponentially and vibrantly. In understanding what enlightenment means to you, you also have to rid yourself of having a competitive nature. Being competitive will always lead you to roadblocks. Never compare your strengths or weaknesses to anyone. It will exhaust you because it is all just perspective. Your ability to jump higher than someone may be irrelevant if their goal is to swim faster. Even if the goals are similar, by being competitive you only confine yourself. For example, you may say to yourself “I would be the best jumper if I could jump one inch higher than my competition”. Instead you should say “I would like to push myself and see if I can jump two inches higher than I normally can”. This mentality will always prevail because now you are only dealing with yourself as opposed to yourself and your competition. Efficiency in energy. Competition can also cause you to chase goals you may have never truly desired in the first place for yourself. Our culture establishes many “definitions” on how we should be that many times we expel so much precious energy just to fit that mold or to feel accepted. In effect, it distracts us from our own true personal goals. Society may suggest that I need to lose or gain 20 pounds when instead maybe my heart is in being flexible. Don’t be distracted. Society can pressure us by creating the illusion that a six figure salary is a must to be successful when instead maybe our hearts are into volunteer work and helping those in need. Don’t be distracted. You may feel left out if you don’t have the latest gadgets or the fastest car on the block but maybe it’s ok because your heart tells you to be with nature. Don’t be distracted. Some imaginary person says we need a career to be successful when some say that jumping from job to job is the best way to learn life experience. On the flipside, if you do want the latest gadgets or hunger for a successful career, it doesn’t mean you are any less entitled to enlightenment or happiness. There is no right or wrong. This is incredibly important – there is absolutely no right or wrong, superior or inferior lifestyle. Whatever lifestyle you lead doesn’t make you any better or lesser than the next. It is all perspective and this life you are living is all about your own true perspective. Never judge others, unless you are willing to uncover things about yourself that may fall in a negative light. Having said that, it may be a good way to discover and get to know who you really are. In the end, you should never compare your needs, desires, possessions, or ability with others. What do YOU want? Just remember that whatever you answer to that question will ALWAYS be right. It all has to start with honesty. Honesty with yourself.
Always move forward in self love and in self focus.
One final thought that may seem incorrect to many is to never think of success or even succeeding. What??!! By thinking of success, you are always working towards a finite goal. Weeks or months or years of hard work to reach a finish line or to put it bluntly, a brick wall. By negating the concept of success, we always push forward. We push that brick wall further and further back while extending our ability and our accomplishments. Definitely take note of what you have done and accomplished in your life but never put a finish line in front of yourself. There is no limit to your potential so why draw a line? Acknowledge your accomplishments, use them as fuel, as a pat on the back and then keep on running. Often times we push ourselves to check a goal off the list because it gives us a rewarding feeling. But what we are slowly doing is conditioning ourselves to think that accomplishment = reward. As a side effect, without reward, we have no desire to accomplish. No motivation. How many times have you gone for a run to never see any changes in your health only to give up? In this specific case, the reward is not immediate but it can cause us to stop running immediately! Instead keep running, eventually see the changes and don’t acknowledge it as success. Rather, just pat yourself on the back and keep running without any destination. Why run to the end of the race just to be congratulated, when you can run around the world and be constantly self motivated. This will open more doors than you thought even existed.
You are limitless.
